U7 Hockey Practice Plan: Fun First, 45 Minutes

At U7 the goal is simple: kids who love coming to the rink. This 45-minute plan keeps lines short and every player on a puck, builds the basics (getting low, edges, passing and shooting) through games, and finishes with a chase they will talk about in the car.

Getting low around the cones, a give-and-go with the coach and a shot: three skills in one short loop. Let players go as soon as the player ahead is halfway around so nobody waits.

  • Bend your knees and get low around the cones.
  • After you pass, keep your feet moving.

Edges & Crossovers Momentum Drill

Edges & Crossovers Momentum Drill hockey drill diagram

Run this one on half ice for U7 and skip the backwards crossovers: skating up to a cone, stopping and pushing off again is the real lesson. Make it a race and they will not notice it is edge work.

  • Stop at the cone, then push off again fast.
  • Short, quick strides out of the stop.

Half Ice St. Louis

A simple pattern: skate over the blue line, take a pass from the other line, stickhandle in and shoot. Every player passes and every player shoots on each rep.

  • Skate hard over the blue line before you turn in.
  • Look at the player you are passing to.

Gates of Dean Park

Shrink the area to one zone and play 2v2 with cones as gates. Small-area games give U7 players far more puck touches than any line drill, and they figure out "go where the puck can find you" on their own.

  • Keep shifts short: 30 seconds, then change.
  • Cheer for the pass through the gate, not just the goal.

Interrupt Breakaway to Breakaway

The coach skates in slowly with the puck and players chase to steal it. For U7, skip the give-and-go: steal it, turn and shoot. End every practice on this and they will leave smiling.

  • Catch the coach, then lift the stick.
  • Turn and go straight to the net.
