Interrupt Breakaway to Breakaway

Interrupt Breakaway to Breakaway hockey drill diagram on an NHL-spec rink
Age: U9+ Type: Defensive Duration: 8-12 min Players: 10-30

On the whistle, the coach skates slowly with the puck toward the net on a breakaway. A player leaves shortly after and uses a quick stick lift to steal the puck from the coach. Once the puck is stolen, the player immediately turns up ice and does a give-and-go with the coach to create their own breakaway. The player then returns to the back of the line.

Key Coaching Points:

• Quick stick lift — don’t hold the coach’s stick up for long

• Keep feet moving while lifting the stick

• Explosive turn and immediate transition into the give-and-go

• Fast pace — lines can be large (up to 30 kids) so keep groups moving quickly
