Pick & Roll Shooting

Pick & Roll Shooting box lacrosse drill diagram on a box lacrosse floor
Age: U12+ Type: Offensive Duration: 10-12 min Players: 8-14

Box lacrosse's bread-and-butter two-man game. A crease player comes up to set a pick on the ball carrier's defender, the carrier uses it and the picker rolls to the net for the finish. Groups work at both ends at once.

Setup:

• A line at the point with balls and a line on the crease side at each end.

• A cone stands in for the ball carrier's defender. Put righties on the right side and lefties on the left.

Execution:

• The crease player sprints up and sets a square, stationary pick on the cone.

• The ball carrier waits for the pick, then drives shoulder-to-shoulder off it toward the net.

• The picker rolls inside toward the crease with the stick up.

• The carrier hits the roller for a quick-stick finish or takes the shot themselves.

Coaching points:

• Wait for the pick to be set. Leaving early is the most common mistake.

• Always roll after the pick. The picker is often the open player.

• Shoot for placement, not speed, and hit the corners of a small box net.

Progressions:

• Add a live defender on the ball, then a second defender.

• Run it from both sides and switch lines after every rep.

• Run it without a goalie for volume, then add the goalie for game reps.
