Goalie Outlet Breakout

Goalie Outlet Breakout box lacrosse drill diagram on a box lacrosse floor
Age: U12+ Type: Transition Duration: 12 min Players: 8-12

A full-floor transition drill that teaches every player where to go the moment the goalie makes a save. Three outlets break to set spots, the goalie hits the open one and the ball goes the length of the floor to a trailer for the finish.

Setup:

• A coach with balls at the top of the defensive zone and goalies in both nets.

• Four defenders around the crease.

Execution:

• The coach shoots on the goalie.

• On the save, the defenders break to their set breakout spots: the low outlet at the far-side mid-boards, the high outlet at the far-side restraining line, and the emergency outlet, who runs up the middle and button-hooks back.

• The goalie finds the open outlet quickly. Here it is the high outlet up the boards.

• The ball carrier runs it hard down the boards while the emergency outlet trails up the middle.

• The carrier hits the trailer in stride for the shot at the far end.

Coaching points:

• Every player has a set spot. Get there on the save, not after it.

• Goalie: move the ball within a couple of seconds and make the high-percentage pass.

• Carrier: run it deep to pull the defence and open up the trailer.

Progressions:

• Add one, then two backcheckers chasing from the shooting end.

• Have the goalie pick between all three outlets on the coach's call.

• Finish with a hard line change to the bench after the shot.
