Breakout Options Under Pressure

Breakout Options Under Pressure hockey drill diagram on an NHL-spec rink
Age: U11+ Type: Breakout Duration: 12 min Players: 5+

A breakout where the defenceman reads the forechecker. The coach dumps the puck into the corner and a forechecker chases. If the forechecker comes hard from the outside, the D carries all the way behind the net and goes D to D; his partner moves it up the wall to the winger, who chips it to the centre swinging through the middle. Then all five go: the centre carries over the far blue line first while the wingers hold their lanes to stay onside, he finds the winger driving wide for the shot, the other winger and the centre drive the net, and the defence follow up to the far blue line. Step 2: the forechecker cuts off the net, so the D turns up the strong-side wall instead, the winger feeds the centre on that side, and the rush goes the same way to the other winger. Let the forechecker choose, so the D has to read it.

Progressions

  1. Option 1: D to D — the drill as shown above
  2. Option 2: up the wall — The forechecker takes away the net: the D goes up the strong-side wall.
