Open in the Neutral Zone

Open in the Neutral Zone hockey drill diagram on an NHL-spec rink
Age: U11+ Type: Transition Duration: 10 min Players: 5+

A neutral-zone regroup that teaches forwards to get open for a pass. The coach rims a puck to the goalie, who moves it up to a defenceman. The D carries and hits the right winger, who has curled and pivoted to show an open stick in the neutral zone. The winger finds the left winger looping up the far wall, who carries in with speed and shoots. Both forwards drive the net and stop for the rebound. Progression: a defenceman skates up and gaps up on the rush, making it a 2-on-1.

Progressions

  1. Start — the drill as shown above
  2. Progression 1 — A defenceman gaps up: now a 2-on-1.
