3-on-2 / 2-on-1 Continuous basketball drill diagram on a basketball court
Age: U11+ Type: Transition Duration: 12-15 min Players: 9-15

A continuous transition drill. Three attackers break against two defenders; as soon as the shot goes up, the two defenders run a 2-on-1 the other way against the shooter.

Setup:

• Three attackers on one baseline with a coach and a ball.

• Two defenders at the other end: one at the free-throw line, one under the rim.

• A second coach on the far baseline to make the outlet pass.

Execution:

• The coach outlets to the middle player, who speed-dribbles up the middle while the wings sprint the wide lanes.

• The top defender stops the ball; the middle player moves it to the open wing.

• The back defender closes out on the wing, so the ball goes to the player cutting to the rim for the layup.

• On the shot, the shooter sprints back on defence.

• The two defenders take the outlet and run a 2-on-1 the other way, one pass maximum.

Coaching points:

• Middle player: get the ball up the floor quickly and make the defence commit.

• Wings: sprint wide, as close to the sidelines as you can, then cut hard to the rim.

• Defenders: talk. The top player stops the ball and the back player takes the first pass.

• Change ends fast. The drill is about the transition.

Progressions:

• Add a shot clock to the 3-on-2.

• Allow the shooter's teammates to join in as trailers.

• Keep score across rounds.
