Slingshot 2v1

Slingshot 2v1 hockey drill diagram on an NHL-spec rink
Age: U11+ Type: Offensive, Defensive Duration: 12 min Players: 5+

A 2-on-1 off a defenceman's slingshot, running at both ends at the same time.

How it works:

• The D starts on the boards at his blue line, skates up to the red line, then turns and skates backwards to defend.

• Two forwards leave from the far boards at centre ice: the puck carrier takes the outside lane, the other drives the middle to the net.

• The carrier passes across to the forward at the net, who shoots.

• All three skate back to their lines and the next group goes.

Setup:

• Forwards line up on the boards at centre ice with a pile of pucks, one line for each end.

• One D at each end, on the opposite boards at the blue line.

• A coach by each line sends the next group.

Progressions:

• Play it live: if the D takes away the pass, the carrier shoots.

• Add a backchecker for a 2-on-2.

Progressions

  1. Start — the drill as shown above
  2. 3rd attacker joins (3v1) — 3rd offensive player joins the rush in a triangle formation when entering the zone.
