1v1 Elimination to Goal

1v1 Elimination to Goal field hockey drill diagram on a field hockey pitch
Age: U10+ Type: Offensive, Defensive Duration: 10-12 min Players: 8-14

A 1v1 in a coned channel that ends with a shot. The attacker attacks the defender's stick, eliminates them with a change of direction and speed, and finishes in the circle. The defender works on closing down and channelling. Runs at both ends.

Setup:

• A channel about 15 yards wide marked with cones, a coach with balls beside it and a goalkeeper in each goal.

• A line of attackers at the start of the channel and defenders waiting at the far end.

Execution:

• The coach plays the ball in and the attacker carries into the channel.

• The defender closes down and tries to tackle or force the attacker wide.

• The attacker pulls the ball one way (a V-drag), then explodes past on the other side.

• Once past, carry into the circle and shoot; the defender turns and chases.

Coaching points:

• Attack the defender's stick to make them commit.

• Change of direction and change of speed together. The acceleration after the move is what creates the separation.

• Keep the ball close through the move, then push it out in front to accelerate.

• Defenders: get there quickly, stay patient on your feet and channel the attacker onto their reverse side.

Progressions:

• Narrow the channel.

• Give the defender a recovery runner.

• Score a point for every clean elimination, even without a goal.
