Walk the Line: Lateral Crossovers to a Shot

Walk the Line: Lateral Crossovers to a Shot hockey drill diagram on an NHL-spec rink
Age: U11+ Type: Defensive, Skating Duration: 10 min Players: 5+

A defence drill for walking the blue line, run at both ends at once. The coach in the corner passes to the D at the point. The D takes the pass, walks the line toward the middle with lateral crossovers (chest to the net, minimal stickhandling), then takes a few strides in toward the net and shoots.

Setup:

• A line of D at one point in each zone, pucks with both coaches.

• Switch to the other point every few reps so the D cross over both ways.

Progressions:

• Add a forward in front of the net to screen and tip.

• Add a forward who pressures from the top: the D walks away from pressure.

Progressions

  1. Start — the drill as shown above
  2. Add a net-front screen — A forward screens the goalie at the net front: the D walks the line, finds a lane and shoots through the screen.
