Routes on Air

Routes on Air football drill diagram on a football field
Age: U10+ Type: Offensive Duration: 10-15 min Players: 12-20

Quarterbacks and receivers build timing with no defence on the field. Three QBs throw at once to a dig, a slant and a go route, and two groups work at both ends of the field for maximum reps.

Setup:

• Three quarterbacks side by side behind the ball, with footballs.

• Receivers in three lines on the line of scrimmage: wide, slot and the far side.

• A second identical group runs the other way at the far end.

Execution:

• On the snap, every QB takes a three-step drop.

• The wide receiver runs a dig, the slot a slant and the far-side receiver a go route.

• Each QB throws to his receiver on time, at the break.

• The receiver secures the catch, tucks it and finishes upfield.

• Rotate lines so every receiver runs every route.

Coaching points:

• Receivers: sell vertical, then break sharply at the depth called.

• QBs: throw on the last step of the drop and lead the receiver away from leverage.

• Catch with your hands, eyes on the ball, then tuck before turning upfield.

Progressions:

• Call the routes by number at the line.

• Add a defender in a scout jersey.

• Move to a full concept (stick, smash or mesh) with one QB reading it.
