4 Dot Passing Basic

4 Dot Passing Basic hockey drill diagram on an NHL-spec rink
Age: U11+ Type: Offensive Duration: 12 Players: 5+

A four-dot passing drill where players pivot backwards to open up for a return pass, then finish with a deke and a shot.

Setup:

• Pucks at all four dots.

Execution:

• The player skates low, then pivots backwards and opens up for the return pass.

• Finish with your favourite head-fake deke around the coach and a shot on net.

Coaching points:

• Make good, hard passes that lead the skater.

• Point your stick up ice when calling for the return pass.

Progressions

  1. Start — the drill as shown above
  2. Add the cross-ice pass — The puck goes across to the other line first, then up to the player streaking up the ice (Variation 1).
